MATERIALS GLOSSARY

  • Marble - metamorphosed limestone consists chiefly of recrystallized calcite or dolomite which is capable of taking a high polish. It occurs in a wide range of colors and variegations and is used in various forms in architecture.
  • Limestone - a sedimentary rock consisting predominantly of calcium carbonate, varieties of which are formed from the skeletons of marine microorganisms and coral: used as a building stone.
  • Travertine - a form of limestone deposited by springs, esp. hot springs, used as a building stone.
  • Terra Cotta - hard fired clay, brownish-red in color when unglazed, that is used for architectural ornaments and facings and structural units.
  • Brick - a block of clay hardened by drying in the sun or burning in a kiln, and used for building, paving, etc. Traditionally, red, brown, or yellow in color.
  • Granite - a coarse-grained igneous rock composed chiefly of orthoclase and albite feldspars, quartz and usually with lesser amounts of one or more other minerals such as mica, hornblende, or augite. Used in various forms in architecture.
  • Concrete block
  • Tile - a thin slab or bent piece of baked clay, sometimes painted or glazed, used for various purposes, as to form one of the units of a roof covering, floor, or revetment. Any similar slabs or pieces of linoleum, stone, rubber, or metal.

  • Lintel - a horizontal architectural member supporting the weight above an opening, as a window or a door.
  • Sill Replacement - a horizontal timber, block, or the like serving as a foundation of a wall, house, etc. horizontal piece or member beneath a window, door, or other opening.
